Fundamental Forecast for British Pound

it that the developed economy with the worst fundamental prospects touts a currency that is among the best performers for the year? Risk appetite. It is true that the currency market - indeed all markets - are highly efficient at pricing in new economic, political, exogenous data and events. However, when speculation is added to the mix, the otherwise clear view is muddled beyond recognition. For the sterling, the disparity seems particularly prominent. Over the past few weeks, data has confirmed a deepening recession, policy groups have projected a significant lag in its recovery relative to its peers and ballooning asset purchases by the central bank means rate hikes are the furthest thing from their mind. Yet, despite all of this, the pound could still break above 1.66 (1.70?) against the dollar, push the EURGBP exchange rate below 0.87 once again and even climb back towards a nine-month highs of 163 against the Japanese yen should risk appetite continue its march higher.

The strain is starting to show; but investor sentiment has maintained its northward march in spite of data, commentary and shaky sources of liquidity. At this point, though, the trend is in need of a revival. GBPUSD (a currency pair whose current rate is heavily reflective of the influence speculation can have), has been consigned to a 600-point range for an almost consistent three months. That is unusual for a pair this volatile. To put the pound’s trend back on path, a catalyst that can shake off the growing concern about a ‘U’-shaped recovery (or even a double dip recession) is necessary. However, with major central banks all turning to a ‘wait-and-see’ approach, discussions of exit strategies from stimulus when the UK has barely reported improvement and credit is still not making it to consumers and small businesses; it would seem that only the markets themselves can bear the burden. Standing outside the sphere of deteriorating British fundamentals, a rally in stock, commodities and other risk-related assets can encourage capital to the relative high returns in the UK (they have to be to encourage investment). The most bullish case for the currency would be a rally in risk appetite that spurs all the markets in tandem.

It is important to keep things in perspective though. While we can find the fuel for a pound rally through capital flows elsewhere, the fundamental health of the economy will act as a constant drag; and even the advance of risk appetite itself is starting to fade. Economic data due over the coming week could not only add fundamental weight to the pound; but it could also warp the currency’s vital relationship to risk appetite. Among the many economic releases, we will cover the gamut of total economic health. For the consumer, the BRC retail sales monitor and Nationwide consumer confidence survey will measure willingness to spend (their contribution to overall growth). Visible trade, industrial production and factor-level inflation will take the temperature from the business level. Even the NIESR GDP estimate will hold a little more influence with the focus so intense on a recovery.

USD Tumbles to Lowest Levels of 2009

The dollar fell to its lowest level of the year as traders returned from the Labor Day holiday, relinquishing the 1.45-level against the euro and sliding to 1.6586 versus the British pound. Commodities continued to test higher at the start of the week, with spot gold breaching the key resistance level of $1,000 per ounce and crude oil firming above the $70 per barrel mark to $71.20. Meanwhile, the Asian equity bourses climbed higher overnight, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rallying by over 2% and the Shanghai Composite gaining by 1.7%.

The US economic calendar is light for most of this week as the majority of the releases are slated for Friday. Weekly jobless claims, which are due on Thursday, are expected to improve marginally to 560k from 570k a week prior. On Friday, the data to be released consists of July wholesale inventory, wholesale sales, and the University of Michigan consumer confidence survey. The wholesale sales reading is estimated to edge up to 0.6% in July from 0.4% a month prior, while the wholesale inventory figure is seen posting a 1.0% decline, albeit improving from a decline of 1.7% previously. The preliminary reading for the September University of Michigan consumer confidence survey is largely unchanged, seen slipping marginally lower to 65.3 from 65.7 in August and the expectations component is estimated to ease to 64.2 from 65.0.

R. FEDERER/T. Robredo

7 5, 6 2, 6 2

An interview with: Roger Federer

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How confident are you in the Hawk Eye system?
ROGER FEDERER: Doesn't matter what I think about it. I've talked enough about it.

Q. Everything worked very well today for you except for the dropshot.
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I won one point on set point in the first set.

Q. You lost two.
ROGER FEDERER: Won one, lost two. Not the end of the world, I think.

Q. Talk about what made the first set so difficult.
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I tried to figure him out a little bit, you know, the way he played me. I thought he really played my backhand a lot. I expected him to open it up sometimes towards my forehand, but he didn't.
I was a little bit unsure for a while there, how I should play him. He was doing a good job of keeping me off balance and being intense from the baseline.
So it was a key to get the break and not having to maybe go through the tiebreak. I was even down breakpoints, so it was kind of tough. Once I got the lead, I could also hit a bit more freely. That didn't allow him to play his game anymore. I got on top of him and played good tennis.

Q. You're coming to the net more and more. Any motivation for that?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I think against the better players, you've got to take time away from them. It forces you automatically to play more aggressive, to go for your shots more. I'm very much a player, the better my opponent plays, the better I play as well. Not that it pulls me down when a guy doesn't play well. It's just I play quite often against guys in Grand Slams that I've never played before.
I'm always a bit cautious. I don't take too many chances, which I should. But it's working. So I'm happy where my game's at right now. Next match is going to be tough, so I'm excited.

Q. Is it true that you play chess as a preparation for a game?
ROGER FEDERER: If I play chess?

Q. Yes.
ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, 15 years last time, so I don't use it as a preparation, no.

Q. What about playing Soderling?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, it seems like he's on a good run again. I think of him, I think obviously of the French Open final, which was a great one for me, a great tournament. He's been able to stay strong.
He played well I think in Bastad, won that. Sort of played okay also through the summer. Here he is in the quarters.
It's a tough challenge. I hope I can play well because it's always kind of close with him. He's a tough player.

Q. Before your match was the Oudin match. Perhaps you got to see it a bit. What observations do you have of the way Melanie Oudin is playing and conducting herself?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, she's beaten great players on the way now. And I think it's nice for a change that sort of somebody's coming up we haven't heard about much before, because it seems like many women now are kind of known. So if they make a breakthrough, it's not much of a surprise anymore like it used to be. Because before we had 14 , 15 , 16 year olds making a breakthrough. Every time it was a big story. I think this is very exciting and very much needed on the women's side.
I thought she's done very well. I mean, I haven't seen all of her matches, but the quality players she beat, I mean, it's fantastic. Today, as well, the way she fought and the way she stayed with Petrova was very nice to say.

Q. Any specifics about the way she plays that particularly impressed you?
ROGER FEDERER: No, I guess just the fighting spirit and being solid off the baseline, having some options in her game. It's something that sometimes you don't see so often, unfortunately.

Q. One more win and it will be 22 straight semifinals in slams. Even at 21, are you almost as proud of that as winning 15?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, I guess when it snaps is when it's a pity. As long as it's going, you go with it, you know. It's not something I aim for. I'm aiming for almost bigger, to be quite honest. I try to defend the title here, not just to reach another semi so my streak stays alive.
I've got to look at the bigger picture, that I stay healthy, that I play a proper game, I choose the right shots, break it down. All of a sudden you forget about the streak.
I hope I can get there again. For this, I need to go through Soderling. I hope I could do it. It would be great.

Q. Having seen up close what Mirka has gone through the last several months with pregnancy and motherhood, what do you think about what Kim has done here coming back and playing as she has?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, I think also there again is a beautiful story. I think she's played very well. Right off the bat in Cincinnati when she came back, that was nice to see and gave you an idea of her almost being also one of the favorites for the US Open, which is quite an amazing achievement.
But it's like riding a bike: once you know how to ride a bike, you never forget that. That's why I'm not that surprised. But it's nice that she found she hasn't lost the love for the game. Going out, what was it, 23, out of the game, that's for me just shocking. I don't understand how you do that.
But, sure, they make the breakthrough earlier. Being a woman, obviously you don't maybe want to wait till you're 35 to have kids. But it's nice to see her back in the game and she played great.

Q. It's the 40th anniversary of Laver's Grand Slam in 1969. Can you to talk about that, winning two Grand Slams, '62 and '69, put that in perspective.
ROGER FEDERER: Amazing achievement, no doubt about it. Back then things were obviously very different to the way they are today. But nevertheless, the achievement was, you know, as great, I think.
He was a wonderful person, too. He conducted himself very well, I think an inspiration and a role model for even our generation today.

Q. You have 11 victories against Soderling so far. What has he improved? The last games have been a little bit close. What has he improved since you started to play him 11 times ago?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, I think he's always been a dangerous player. I think once you come on tour, you have a certain game, certain game plan, you can adjust it a little bit. But at the end of the day when it gets important, they play the way when they came on tour. Maybe they're more solid. I think that's what he's become. He's become mentally and physically stronger. And then he knows the game better today than he used to.
These are already three amazing improvements. That's what makes him a great player today.

Q. Is it fair to say at this point with the streak going so well you're playing more out of instinct than you were in the beginning of the year?
ROGER FEDERER: I guess. I guess if things go well, you don't ask yourself that many questions. So yes. But at the same time, I remember almost six years ago, I don't care almost what my opponent's best serve is, for instance, or what his best shot is. I'll just improvise, because I'm very good at that. I concentrate on what I do best. Then I'll decide what comes from my opponent. I'll adjust.
I like playing the game that way instead of, you know, trying to figure out every possible move there is out there.

Q. What has been your favorite thing to do with the twins? How are your diaper duty changing skills?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't know. Thank God nobody is judging me on it, but I'm trying hard. I'm trying to be good at it. I guess women are always going to be better at that stuff, you know.
I try hard. It's been a lot of fun, you know, spending time with them. Yeah, every day is something new and something different a bit. Obviously we're waiting also and excited about interaction we're going to soon have with them, being healthy. So we're having a pretty good time.

Q. You're hands on?
ROGER FEDERER: As much as I can. I'm here. I'm not quite hands on the way I should be. But, you know, got to play tennis, too. I like it too much to go away.
But, no, I'm hands on as much as I can, yes.

Q. Talk about you and Genova, playing Davis Cup. Do you remember anything?
ROGER FEDERER: Genova, yeah, I played under 14, I think, maybe under 16 as well. I don't remember, but I was there a long time ago. I used to go on vacation there, as well, with my parents.

Q. When you were a child?
ROGER FEDERER: In Camogli. I used to go there a couple times. Yeah, I mean, I like going to Italy in general. But I wasn't very good back then yet, so let's talk about something else.

Q. How do you keep motivated to go out and beat Hewitt, beating him 13 times in a row, undefeated against Robredo and Soderling? What gets you motivated for the matches?
ROGER FEDERER: It's not like even trying to beat him again; it's just about having fun out there, playing a good match, playing good tennis, enjoying the moment, playing in packed stadiums. It's something not many people get an opportunity to do.
I think everybody would love to be in my shoes. Why should I give away my spot really because I enjoy too much and people love to come see me play? So this is motivation alone for me. I mean, it's plenty. I have plenty of reasons for me to keep on playing.

Q. How important is it to specifically work on footwork exercises? Is it just natural talent?
ROGER FEDERER: I guess the fluent [sic] movement I have is talent maybe. Then again, I needed to work on my coordination after all, even though it was very good as a kid.
Just a lot of hard work, you know, make myself stronger so I have options out there, because if you're not fit, you know, you have to maybe end the points shorter. You know, you're worried about going maybe four or five sets, so it's first of all just getting that out of the way so you can really play point by point, not think about what's going to happen in two hours so that you won't be fit.
I work hard on it, you know. Not every day, but as much as I can.

Critical reaction
The film received overwhelmingly negative reaction from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 5% of critics gave the film positive reviews based on 72 reviews, with the consensus report saying, "All About Steve is an oddly creepy, sour film, featuring a heroine so desperate and peculiar that audiences may be more likely to pity than root for her.". [4] According to another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average score of 17%, based on 25 reviews. [5]

Many critics have described the film as the worst they have seen this year, and the lowest point in Bullock's career, calling it worse than Speed 2. However, the Globe and Mail gave the film 3 stars, praising Bullock's performance as "the star attraction as the annoyingly endearing Mary" and director Phil Traill for making "the whole thing sparkle." Chuck Wilson of the LA Weekly called the film a "refreshingly quirky comedy."

Jaycee Dugard's personality kept her alive

Jaycee Dugard's stepfather said it was the girl's laid-back personality that allowed her to survive 18 years in the captivity of a convicted rapist near Antioch.

"People say, 'Why didn't she escape,'" Carl Probyn said during a brief impromptu interview Saturday several hundred feet from where his then-11-year-old stepdaughter was snatched off the street June 10, 1991. "If that was Shayna (Dugard's younger half-sister), she'd be dead because she'd be climbing that fence every day."

Probyn continued, "So Jaycee did what she had to do to survive, you know, and they bonded and what are you going to say?

"She was just a real mellow girl, you know. That kept her alive."

Probyn, accompanied

Jaycee Dugard was gone, but her image and the pink ribbons that came to symbolize hope for her safe return became a lasting image among the locals on Tahoe's south shore.

When Dugard emerged Aug. 26 at a Concord police station, she was a 29-year-old mother of two girls who police say were fathered by Phillip Garrido, a 58-year-old convicted rapist who, along with his wife, Nancy Garrido, is accused of
kidnapping Dugard and keeping her in a compound of tents and outbuildings behind their house in unincorporated Contra Costa County.

Besides Probyn, one of the last people to see Dugard before the abduction was Ken Mirell, an Internet systems manager and former news photographer.

Mirell was getting his son Matt, then 4, ready for preschool when he walked toward the front of the house and through his front window saw Dugard, then a fifth-grader, walking up the street.

It was a fleeting moment that meant little at the time, but after taking his son to preschool that day he returned home to a swarm of police and learned the girl had been kidnapped.

The image of the blond girl with the pink top walking to school was seared into his mind.

Like others, Mirell said the abduction shattered the sense of security and safety at the lake.

"You wouldn't see kids walking to school after that," he said. "Parents would drive their kids to the bus stop."

Mirell kept Matt really close. "For the next five or six years, he had a death grip on my hand," Mirell said.

Mirell has no illusions about the difficulties ahead for the girl and her family, but said the girl's discovery is cause for unmitigated joy.

"Total excitement," he said, describing his emotions on hearing the news. "Jubilation. She's alive."

"You can imagine Terry. She's probably dreamt about getting that phone call for 18 years," he said.

Reflecting on the rediscovery of his stepdaughter, Probyn said it never bothered him that he was suspected by many people of being involved in the kidnapping and that he was gratified the descriptions he gave of the car used in the kidnapping and the appearance of Nancy Garrido were "dead on."

He also wondered why, given the accuracy of those images, the Garridos could not be found.

"Toward the end I must admit I wanted a recovery," he said. "I didn't expect her alive but I wanted to catch these people.

"My wife is so happy. She's the happiest woman in the world," he said.

Probyn, who is separated from Terry Probyn, said it could be another week or two or longer before he reunites with his stepdaughter.

"They're just going real slow," he said.

Whatever the challenges ahead and the sorrows of the past, Probyn said the important thing is Dugard is now back with her family: "We've got her from now on."

Jaycee Lee Dugard

On Sunday, an estimated 2,000 marchers carrying 1,000 pink balloons paraded down South Lake Tahoe's main thoroughfare to celebrate the re-emergence of Dugard, who identified herself Aug. 26 in a Concord police station.

Reversing the route followed on the 10-year-anniversary of Jaycee Dugard's abduction, about 500 people marched this morning to celebrate her reappearance.

China showcases commercial jet at Asia air show

China showcased its newest and biggest commercial plane Tuesday - a jetliner with as many as 200 seats that could boost the country's fledgling aviation industry to compete with Western rivals like Boeing Co. and Airbus.

The narrow-body, single-aisle C919 plane is scheduled to take its maiden voyage in 2014 before being delivered to buyers in 2016, according to Wang Wenbin, an official with the plane's manufacturer, state-backed Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China.

Work on the prototype began last week, he said. A car-sized mockup of the jet was on display Tuesday at an Asian air show in Hong Kong.

The project is a major first step by China toward developing homegrown commercial planes, along with the research and technology capabilities, for its fast-growing domestic market rather than relying on foreign companies. It would also pave the way for international expansion.

Because China's nascent commercial aerospace industry still lacks expertise, the C919 initially will be outfitted with engines and other parts from foreign companies.

"The civil aviation industry is just starting to boom," said Wang, COMAC's assistant general manager. "Although we have ... experience on civil aircraft manufacturing, we still have a long way to go in comparison with those aviation industry superpowers such as the U.S.A."

The C919 is designed for short- to medium-range hauls up to 5,555 kilometers (3,450 miles), and can seat as many as 200 depending on the configuration. According to state media, the first 9 in the jet's name was chosen because it suggests eternity in Chinese culture, with the 19 referring to 190 seats the plane might accommodate. C stands for COMAC.

Chinese aviation executives make no secret about their global ambitions.

"C919 comes after Airbus and Boeing, so you will have ABC in the aviation industry," the plane's chief designer Wu Guanghui told state media earlier this year.

The plane's suppliers have yet to be announced, though officials said they were in talks with four engine manufacturers, including General Electric, and a decision would be made later this year.

Among the key selling points that would help China take on Boeing and Airbus - whose 737 and A320, respectively, dominate this segment of the market - are efficiency and costs, according to Chen Jin, COMAC's sales and marketing chief.

Compared to similar jets made by the two global aviation giants, the C919 would be cheaper for airlines to operate and use between 12 percent and 15 percent less fuel, Chen said in an interview with The Associated Press.

But the day when China is poaching orders from Western companies in their own markets is still far off. Marketing of the C919 will be directed at the mainland at first, likely local carriers such as Air China and China Eastern, before going global.

"It depends on the market," Chen said. "The market is changing all the time."

To succeed, China won't be able to count simply on state-owned airlines buying local, said Andrew Herdman, director general of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines.

Whether it makes sense commercially- how the jet stacks up against Western planes on operating costs, resale value, maintenance track records and other standards - will be the final test. And in that respect, matching more-established manufactures will be very tough in the early going, not least because of the uncertainties surrounding a new product.

"It's about the bottome line," Herdman said. "That was the challenge for Airbus and others .... and that's no different for China."

"It's obviously very ambitous," Herdman said. "But we welcome competition and we certainly welcome innovation."

Also in development by Shanghai-based COMAC is a 70 to 110-seat ARJ-21 passenger jet, designed for the local market.

Last year, General Electric Commercial Aviation Services signed a deal to order 25 of ARJ-21s. GE is supplying the engines for the project.

gold price rises over $1,000

prices rose above $1,000 per ounce on Tuesday to its highest since March 2008 - suggesting investors are wary of the U.S. dollar's weakness and expect international interest rates to remain low for some time.

The gold contract for December delivery traded up $6.50, or 0.7 percent, at $1,003.20 per troy ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It had gone as high as $1,009.70; that is the highest since it hit a record of $1,033.90 on March 17 last year.

Gold is typically bought as an alternative to the dollar among safe-haven assets favored by investors seeking to preserve capital. So its rise often correlates to a drop in the value of the American currency.

That is what happened in spring of 2008, when worries about the financial crisis brewing in the U.S. helped drive gold to a record. Gold last went over $1,000 in February.

"It is mainly the reflection of the weakness of the dollar," said Julian Jessop, economist at Capital Economics.

The dollar fell to 92.32 yen on Tuesday from 93.05 yen the night before, while the euro strengthened to $1.4467 from $1.4332 as stock markets rose and investor sentiment improved.

Jessop noted, however, that gold was also being boosted by market expectations that global central banks would keep their interest rates low for some time to come. One disadvantage to holding gold is that no interest is earned - but rates on dollar-denominated assets such as government bonds have fallen sharply, lessening that disadvantage.

"Near-zero interest rates in many of the world's largest economies reduces the opportunity cost of holding gold," Jessop said.

The fact that 20 of the world's rich and developing nations promised over the weekend to keep in place their stimulus measures - which include both spending as well as low interest rates - reinforced the appeal of gold.

Jessop was not convinced gold could sustain such high prices for very long or push much higher, since consumers quickly start selling gold items to take advantage of stronger prices

McDonald lose trade mark fight against Mccurry

The Federal Court ruled Tuesday that McDonald's cannot appeal against another court's verdict that had allowed McCurry to use 'Mc' in its name. The owner says McCurry, which serves Indian food, is an abbreviation for Malaysian Chicken Curry.

The ruling by a three-member panel of the Federal Court ends all legal avenues for McDonald's to protect its name from what it said was a trademark infringement.

"On the basis of unanimous decision, our view is that" McDonald's plea to carry the case forward has no merit, said chief judge Arifin Zakaria. "It is unfortunate that we have to dismiss the application with costs," he said.

McDonald's will have to pay 10,000 ringgit ($2,900) to McCurry, a popular eatery in Jalan Ipoh on the edge of Kuala Lumpur's downtown. McDonald's lawyers refused to comment, except to say the company will abide by the judgment.

McCurry lawyer Sri Devi Nair said the ruling means McDonald's does not have a monopoly on the prefix 'Mc,' and that other restaurants could also use it as long as they distinguish their food from McDonald's.

"This is a precedent for everyone to follow," he said.

A three-member Appeal Court panel had ruled in favor of McCurry Restaurant in April this year when it overturned a 2006 high court ruling that had upheld McDonald's contention.

Arifin said McDonald's lawyers were unable to point out faults in the Appeal Court judgment, which had said there was no evidence to show that McCurry was passing off McDonald's business as its own. The Appeals Court also said McDonald's cannot claim an exclusive right to the 'Mc' prefix in the country.

McDonald's asked the Federal Court for permission to appeal against that decision but was denied Tuesday.

"We are very much relieved. We hope to expand. This is what we wanted to do from the beginning and we were stalled for eight years," said A.M.S.P. Suppiah, the owner of McCurry.

"I am so happy ... we have nothing in similarity with them at all. That's how we have felt all this while," said his wife, Kanageswary Suppiah.

The Appeal Court said McCurry's signboard has white and gray letters against a red background with a picture of a smiling chicken giving a double thumbs-up, in contrast to McDonald's red and yellow "M" logo. McCurry also serves only Indian food, not competing with McDonald's Western menu, the court said.

McDonald's began operations in Malaysia in 1982 and has 137 outlets in the Southeast Asian country.

Crude prices shot above $70 a barrel Tuesday as a falling dollar pushed investors to commodities such as oil and gold.

Benchmark crude for October delivery gained $3.15 to $71.17 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract settled at $68.02 on Friday after rising 6 cents.

The dollar fell to a low for the year Tuesday against the euro and several other currencies as gold prices surpassed $1,000 an ounce for the first time since February.

Investors often turn to commodities as a hedge against inflation and dollar weakness, and gold seems to be pulling oil along for the ride, said PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn.

"The move in metals has oil reluctantly rallying higher," Flynn said in his morning report. "Normally crude oil would be worrying about the upcoming OPEC meeting as opposed to worrying about the gold market."

Leaders of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries have signaled they plan to keep output levels unchanged at the group's meeting Wednesday in Vienna. That could send oil prices lower as traders expect OPEC members to increasingly exceed the group's official production quotas.

Saudi Arabian oil minister Ali Naimi said Tuesday that crude markets were "in good shape," boosting expectations OPEC will use its meeting this week to stress compliance with output quotas instead of cutting production.

Naimi, whose country is OPEC's top producer, told reporters in Vienna that crude's current price "is good for everybody: consumers and producers."

Energy markets also got a boost from rising equity markets, as the Dow Jones industrials and the S&P 500 opened higher and most major Asian and European stock indexes rose Tuesday.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline fell a half penny to $2.578, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. That's 6.5 cents more than a month ago, but $1.08 less than at this time last year.

In other Nymex trading, gasoline for October delivery rose 3.71 cents to $1.8134 a gallon, and heating oil gained 5.17 cent to $1.7722 a gallon. Natural gas fell 5.2 cents to $2.676 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, Brent crude was up $1.66 to $68.48 on the ICE Futures exchange.

German Factory Orders Continue To Rise In July

Germany factory order continued to grow in July for the fifth consecutive month, although at a slower pace, boosted by an increase in domestic demand, an official report showed Monday.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology said factory orders climbed a seasonally adjusted 3.5% month-on-month in July, faster than the 2% forecast by economists, but slower than a revised 3.8% growth seen in June. A rise in the new orders in the third quarter is also likely to result in industrial output growth, the ministry said.

The new orders increased mainly due to rise in domestic orders, which grew 10.3%, partly offset by a 2.3% drop in orders from abroad.

Year-on-year, orders continued to fall in July, by 19.8%, much slower than a 25.2% drop in the preceding month. Economists expected a 20.4% fall. Domestic orders fell 24.8%, while orders from abroad dropped 25.6%. New orders have been falling continuously since May 2008.

Orders from the Eurozone were down 29.8% on an annual basis, while orders from the non-Eurozone countries dropped 21.5%.

A gain in new orders usually raises hope that manufacturing sector is improving. In August, the purchasing managers' index, a barometer to measure performance of the manufacturing sector, rose to its highest level in almost 12 months.

The German economy exited recession in the second quarter, growing for the first time after four consecutive quarters of declines. The gross domestic product climbed 0.3% sequentially, following a 3.5% contraction in the preceding quarter. Despite the positive reading for the second quarter, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the the national output could contract by between 5% to 6% this year.

Earlier this month, the OECD said in a report that the global recovery is likely to arrive earlier than expected. However, it expects the pace of activity to remain weak throughout next year. The Paris-based organization expects the German economy to contract 4.8% this year based on its latest estimates, upwardly revised from 6.1% drop estimated earlier.

Commerzbank analyst Simon Junker said the increase in new orders is due mainly to large-scale orders for miscellaneous vehicles. Citing the data, the analyst pointed out that the mood of uncertainty triggered by the shocks of late 2008 is fading and the backlog of demand is now gradually being released. According to Junker, the German economy should achieve strong growth in the second half of the year.

EURUSD Daily Forecast: September 07

EURUSD Forecast:
We had a volatile market on Friday. The pair attempted to push lower, bottomed at 1.4190 but further bearish scenario was rejected as the pair whipsawed to the upside, topped at 1.4326 and closed at 1.4293. On h4 chart below we still have a valid bearish channel but we have some upside pressure right now, testing the bearish channel. A violation to the bearish channel should trigger further upside pressure testing 1.4446 resistance area. The bias is bullish in nearest term but we all know that actually the pair is still consolidating in range area (of 1.4405/46 – 1.4180), so I prefer to stand aside for now and wait for further development. For me the best trading strategy in this kind of market is to buy around 1.4180 or to sell around 1.4405/46 area with a tight stop loss. Immediate support is seen at 1.4250 followed by 1.4180.

Trading in margin basis
